The Offenders

#1 www.microsoft.com

The mother of all bad code, this site has it all, invalid, proprietry markup, semantically awful and to top it all they make the worlds leading web browser, you'd think they would know better.

#2 www.msn.com

Probably the most popular portal on the planet, pity its code is awful...

#3 www.apple.com

For an organisation that pride themselves in the fine details of the products they create, the code used here is suprising.

Mission

The internet is full of bad code, our mission is to name and shame some of the worst offenders.

We accept that they probably won't care and we admit straight away that our code is not the best, but our code is valid and the techniques used are sound.

Some people don't seem to realise that valid code means more efficient code which in turn means fewer costs, it's easier to maintain, tends to be smaller and therefore uses less bandwidth.

Having said that, a site could be built entirely out of .gifs and still be valid, it would however be a perfect example of 'bad code'.

And don't forget accessibility and the legal requirements. It has been UK law since 1999 that websites must be accessible, that is generally taken to mean the site achieves WAI AA or better, most sites don't even meet WAI A.

We'll be adding a submission and voting system so you can tell us which sites you think need to be at the top, check back soon.
