Wharncliffe in Danger

Wharncliffe Heath

Please help.

I am writing this as a resident of Deepcar, Sheffield about a
proposed housing development very near to Wharncliffe Heath & Crags.

The proposal is to build over 400 homes at the site of disused sidings
at the old Deepcar Railway Station.

The proposal can be viewed here

Nb. The application initially says only 35 dwellings will be built,
but the associated plans say 445!

The local environment cannot sustain 400+ dwellings in this location, there are not enough schools, doctors or local amenities to support an additional 400+ families.

The proposed site is very near Wharncliffe Crags and Heathland, an important natural resource, recognised and protected by the forestry commission and would be bound to have an adverse impact on a fragile eco-system.

The heath includes Iron Age and Romano-British archaeology of considerable interest. Part of Wharncliffe Heath is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM), and part is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and County Nature Reserve. It is well-used by the community, many of whom wish to better understand its history.

I have already objected to the plan online, If you believe that this proposal is wrong, you can do so to - object here

Contact these kind people at Wharncliffe Heathlands Trust to offer your support.

Write to your MP.

If you are not already aware of this, please help in anyway you can -
If you already know all about it then my apologies for ranting at you.

Many Thanks.

update.

A response from Dave Buttle, Wharncliffe Heathlands Trust

Dear Jim

I have been aware of the situation for about 3 years and have talked to
the city ecologist (one of our trustees) and our MP (our Patron) about
it on a number of occasions. I have presented evidence that proximity of
dwellings harms Nightjar populations, and have arranged for Sorby NHS to
survey the site. Despite the site being really good for dragonflies
(including Black Darter) and a foraging site for bats, and despite the
fact that it is on the R Don flood plain, it seems to be a done deal.
The site is officially classified as a brownfield site, and with the
government’s housing target, development is unavoidable so it would seem.

I would encourage you to continue making a fuss. In particular get in
touch with Angela Smith smithac@parliament.uk and the City Council.

I wish you the best of luck!

Dave Buttle

Gone to the dogs…

January 17, 2008

Thousands of greyhounds are needlessly killed every year, tens of thousands are injured. The average life expectancy of a racing greyhound is just 3 years.

Anti-Social

September 26, 2007

A business proposition.

In the light of the recent swathe of “web 2.0″ enabled social networking websites and the absolute garbage to be found on the pages created by their users, I am proposing a new start-up.

Anti-Social (beta)

Anti-Social (beta) is a site where users can create a free account, create a page or pages all about themselves and their friends, include news feeds (RSS, Atom, XML etc), video’s, photographs of themselves showing there arses at parties, godawful midi files, animated .gifs of ponies covered in pink glitter and a psychedelic green and yellow background…

…ALL FOR FREE!

“So what?” - you may ask, this is nothing new…

Here’s the kicker - for a one off nominal fee (TBC) we will completely hide all of your information so no other bugger can find you, poke you, tag your picture or send you a self installing Easter egg widget (application) that spews random web garbage all over your page. No one but yourself will ever see any of your information!

We promise* not to use your information for any purpose at all, we wont give away, sell or otherwise distribute your data without your express permission**

*(fingers crossed!)
**(We might change our minds…)

To receive an invitation to the closed beta, please leave a comment below - we’ll get back to you when we can be arsed.

Anybody wishing to help fund this start up should send cheques to the usual address.

Ever get the feeling you’ve been had?

…Who said that, oh yeah - John Lydon (nee Rotten) in 1970 something with regard to the Sex Pistols making loadsa money out of the recording industry.

Well, they are at it again, the Pistols are due to reform to promote the re-issue of a few singles, they will play at the Brixton Academy in London on 8 November.

Punk was not about anarchy, it was about making as much money as possible in the shortest possible time, they ramped us up, took our cash and legged it. Punk was a con…

it’s a swindle.

Notcafé

April 26, 2007

It seems Nescafé’s tagline is ‘It’s all about you”.

…but who is it really about?

Nestlé’s official policy on the global coffee trade is that “free trade” is “fair trade”, that reducing barriers to trade will mean lower prices for consumers and higher revenues for producers 1. As a result, there is only one Fair Trade Nescafé brand (Partner’s Blend), which in the UK is sold only at Tesco and Sainsbury’s 2.

But free trade can only have this effect if barriers are lowered in importing countries as well as exporting ones. If markets in the developing world are deregulated whilst import tarrifs remain in place in Europe and elsewhere, producers are placed under global market pressure without any legal or market protection.

So how much pressure are Nestlé putting on trade regulators in the developed world? They are keen to tell us how much they are doing in Africa 3, but how much are they doing in Europe and the US?

Do you know?
